Breaking Down Barriers Through Hip-Hop Counter-Culture
Janel began her dance training in 1984 studying mostly under the direction of her mother and grandmother. She spent most of her young life at the family’s studio. In 1987, a move to St. Louis created new dance training opportunities. In 1988, while studying rudimentary dance classes, she took tumbling and gymnastics classes and later studied with Bulgarian Olympic Gymnastics Coach, Illia Nedev. At the age of seven, Janel took classes in Ballroom Dance and by age nine, she competed throughout the Mid-West in many styles of dance. At fourteen, she learned to instruct in the world of dance
At age sixteen, Janel began teaching children’s classes throughout the St. Louis area. Upon graduation from High School, Janel attended The College of Dupage in Chicago as a Performing Arts Major. Janel performed with an improvisational acting troupe, headed by Craig Burger of Second City Sketch Comedy and taught dance at the Lemon Tree Academy of Performing Arts.
Janel moved to Omaha and started her own dance company called Legacy Dance, a community based recreational dance program for children in 2004. In 2005, she began choreographing dance pieces for an Omaha based theater group, S.P. Candy Performance Art.
Since then, Janel has professionally choreographed dance styles such as, Swing, Hip Hop, Modern Jazz, Ballet and Musical Theater Jazz. Janel is now the dance director of The Basement “Hip Hop” Dance Studio. She lives to dance and teach her students to advance and develop his or her dance skills in a positive, but disciplined environment. She encourages her students to take an active approach in their learning, and helps her students reach their personal dance and life goals. Janel instructs with a creative mind, multitude of beliefs and resources. She encourages her students to challenge themselves in every facet of life!
